Fall Lawn Preparations in Central Texas

Published August 27, 2025

In Central Texas, fall lawn prep is about recovery, prevention, and strengthening. A few well-timed tasks now will carry your lawn through winter and bring it out strong in spring. Here's the checklist our crew works through every fall.

1. Adjust Watering

Temperatures drop, so your lawn won't need as much water. Reduce irrigation but don't stop entirely — grass still needs moisture to recover and store energy for winter. If your sprinkler schedule needs dialing in, our irrigation maintenance service can help.

2. Fertilize

Apply a fall fertilizer high in potassium (and balanced nitrogen if needed). This strengthens roots and helps your lawn store nutrients for winter and a green-up in spring. If you'd like us to handle it, our lawn treatment program covers seasonal fertilization.

3. Aeration

If your soil is compacted from summer traffic or drought, fall is a good time to aerate. This improves oxygen flow and nutrient absorption down at the root zone.

4. Overseeding (if needed)

If you have thin spots, overseed with your warm-season grass (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine) early in fall while the soil is still warm. Some people overseed with annual ryegrass for temporary green color in winter, but it's optional and requires extra mowing and watering.

5. Weed Control

Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in early fall (September–October) to prevent winter weeds like henbit, poa annua, and clover. Spot-treat existing weeds with post-emergents.

6. Raise Mower Height

Gradually raise your mowing height in fall. A little longer grass protects roots and helps retain moisture going into winter. Our recurring mowing maintenance adjusts cut height with the season automatically.

7. Leaf Cleanup

Don't let leaves pile up and smother your lawn. Mulch them with your mower or rake them regularly.

8. Pest & Disease Check

Fall is when grubs and chinch bugs can still be active. Keep an eye out for brown patches or irregular dead spots. Brown patch fungus is common in St. Augustine during cool, damp fall weather — treat with fungicide if needed.

Bottom Line

Fertilize, control weeds, adjust watering, and clean up debris so your lawn heads into winter healthy and comes out strong in spring. If you'd rather leave the fall checklist to a professional crew, we're ready to help.
